Juan Luis Guerra knows exactly what to do to keep his millions of fans satisfied. His music album “A Son de Guerra” is no exception to this rule: satisfaction is truly guaranteed!
Juan Luis Guerra, the man who single handledly revolutionized Merengue and Bachata music by mixing them with Classical, Jazz, American Pop, and African Music, brings Latin Music to a whole new level with the new album “A Son de Guerra” he produced together with his band 4.40. The first song “No Aparecen” (“They Do Not Appear”) is a joyful and classical “Merengue Del Campo” (“Merengue From the Countryside”). This song fills me with hapiness when hearing it. “La Guagua” is a tropical mix of Cuban Son, Senegalese Music and Reggaeton rap which brings the summer feeling in every heart. The Spanish Rock song “La Calle” (“The Street”) Guerra sings together with Latin superstar Juanes is a dream come true for the two singers, and it shows. The mix of Ska, Cumbia, and Spanish Rumba is very catchy indeed. “Son al Rey” (“Song to the King”) is what I call a “Reli-Cumbia”. The song is dedicated to the 'King of Kings' and is also very dancable for the ones who love Colombian rhytms. The Son-Guajira-Salsa-R&B-Jazz song “Arregla Los Papeles” (“Arrange The Paperwork”) is very danceable for Salsa on1 and Mambo on2 dancers. I think the last group will totally fall in love with “Lola's Mambo”: it is sung in English, and the song is a very well thought combination of the '50 and 60's big band Mambo's with Latin Jazz.
The typical “Juan Luis Guerra Style” Bachata's “Mi Bendicion” (“My Blessing”) and “Bachata En Fukuoka” (“Bachata in the City of Fukuoka”) are my two favorite songs on this album.
A Son de Guerra is not an album to buy just to have 'that one song'. All the songs on the entire album are 'high quality material' and have 'Salsa dancefloor hit' potential. Bachata En Fukuoka, and the Cuban Son in English “Caribbean Blues“ could be here to stay for a very long time.
