The French contradanse entered Cuba on various fronts during the 18th Century: on English ships to Havana, in the Oriente (East) it arrived through the French colonists fleeing chaotic Haiti. With the black Cuban musicians' influence, the contradanse became a half-breed, thus giving birth to the contradanza, whose music was called danzón. Today, the danzón is enjoyed in its stylistic descendents: the chachachá, the mambo, and the ritmo nuevo.
