Gancho: Styling Dance Element. "Gancho" means "hook" in Spanish and describes certain "hooking actions" in some dances of Latin American heritage, in Argentine Tango (leg action) and Salsa (arm action and foot action) in particular.
Advanced definition: Cuban Casino Dance Technique. This means "Hook". The Leader turns his Hand Connection to a "Carry combined with a Hook" Hand Connection. He then brings his elbow very fast over her arm from the inside out. He can now fixate her upper arm in between his upper arm and his own torso. The Leader can decide to lead the Follower using the Gancho, or he can choose use the Gancho only as a Styling Dance Element.
A Gancho is commonly executed by starting it on the 7th count and by landing in the Gancho on the 1st count (On1). Getting out of the Gancho is also done on an un-even count (1, 3, 5, 7). Caution for the Leaders: do watch out for your elbow when getting in and out of the Gancho. If not executed correctly your elbow may hit the face of the Follower!
