Latin Jazz

Latin jazz is the general term given to music that is a combination of rhythms from African and Latin American countries with jazz harmonies from the United States. There are two main types of Latin Jazz.

1) Brazilian Latin Jazz - bossa nova and samba. 2) Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz - salsa, merengue, songo, son, mambo, bolero, charanga and cha cha cha.

Cuban vocalist and dancer, the only female member of the world famous Buena Vista Social Club. Portuondo joined the dance group of Cabaret Tropicana, Havana, in 1950: “I was very shy and ashamed to show my legs”.

Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan is one of the most celebrated Latin American artists in Europe and the US. Her international success has lead to numerous grammies and awards and several guest appearances on film and TV. Gloria was born in Havana, Cuba (1 September 1957).

Tito Puente

Tito Puente
Puente is often referred to as the “King of the Mambo”. An American (New York) composer, bandleader, pianist and virtuoso percussionist, he became the most beloved symbol of Latin jazz and Mambo music.
