Online Salsa Turn Pattern Dance Formula (OSDF)

Online Salsa Turn Pattern Dance Formula: A way of writing down (Salsa) Dance Styles, Dance Techniques, Dance Combinations, Dance Elements, Dance Movements and Dance Transitions in a Turn Pattern. This way of writing dance has been developed by Sederick Short. It's an extrapolation and adaptation of the work that has been done by others in the past in combination with his own insights. Working with abbreviations and a certain order of writing down the actions makes it possible to turn dancing into writing.

Example: (On1) Mambo C - R-R (7), R-R CBwrap, R-R Wrap 1,5 FRT, R-R Mambo O - C w/ R-R Lloop (7), CBL C, Mambo C. Explanation: The Dance couple dances with the Leader starting to Break on the 1st Beat of the music. The dance couple starts dancing Mambo Basic in Closed Dance Position and goes to an Open Dance Position while he changes to a Right to Right Hand Hold on the 7th Beat.

During the second Basic (after the comma) the Leader leads the Follower into making a Cross Body Wrap starting with the Right to Right Hand Hold. The third Basic (again after the comma) starts with the Follower standing in a Wrap Dance Position with the Right to Right Hand Hold.

The Leader leads the Follower into making one and a half Mambo Right Turns. During the 4th Basic (again after the comma) the dance couple dances a Mambo Basic, but the Leader starts from an Open Dance Position and goes into a Closed Dance Position making a Leaders Loop with the Right to Right Hand Hold on the 7th Beat.

The dance couple dance a Cross Body Lead starting and ending in a Closed Dance position during the 5th Basic. They end the turn pattern by dancing a Mambo Basic in a Closed Dance Position. Now it's posible to "Cut & Paste" the separate dance techniques together in different dance sequences. It's also possible to invent a lot of dance variations, and to recognise new dance techniques, dance combinations and turn patterns as variations of the ones you already know. Writing them down also makes it easier to remember and to reproduce the turn patterns when needed. Many salsa dance teachers use this technique to make new turn patterns and also as a memory aid.

Dancer Of The Week

Sanne Keijzer

Sanne Keijzer
Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
