Spin(s)

Spin(s): Partnering and Freestyle Dance Technique. A Spin is a Turn on 1 (or on both feet together) around the dancers own turning axis (360 degrees turn). Spins are very popular in Western Style Salsa Dancing. Walking Turns (see "Walking Turns") are actually 180 degrees Spins on one foot while stepping with the other foot.

The preparation for Spinning to the right for the Follower is:

1. The Follower stands with her weight on her right foot.

2. She twists with her hips, turns her shoulder line, and steps with her left toe in a 45 degrees angle in front of her (5th Dance Position) all to the left. She has both her knees bent (2nd count).

3. The Follower starts Spinning to the right by pulling her right shoulder to the back and"‘punching" with her free hand and her shoulders to the right. She brings her left big toe to her right foot and "drags" it on the ground.

The rule for spinning is: the body starts to spin, the head follows with a quick Spot (see "Spotting"), and the body ends by slowing down at the very end. Sequence: Body – Head – Body. The Leader leads the feet of the Follower by swinging down towards her right foot with his leading hand (1st count), and bringing the hand towards her head (2nd count). He starts to lead her into spinning depending on how much spins he wants her to make. For 2 spins he starts to lead her on the 4th count (from left around her head to right). If he wants her to make 3 or 4 Spins he starts to lead her on the 3rd count.

Spotting for the Follower for 2 Spins: on counts 5 and 7.

For 3 Spins: on counts 4, 6 and 8, or on counts 5,6 and 7.

For 4 Spins: on counts 5,6,7 and 8. The Spins does not count if the ending is not perfect! Use abs muscles and other muscles in the position of a statue while spinning. Bend your knees a little to create stability. Don’t let the free hands hang around, but keep them in a frame, which wil help you with your balance.

Sanne Keijzer
Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
