Zapateo is a country dance of Spanish origin danced in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Traces of the dance were discovered in Cuban country villages in the early 18th Century. The dance couple stamps on the floor with the heels, thus counting out the rhythm. The man dances with hands held behind his back, performing the more complicated steps. Sometimes the dancer will tie knives to his shoes, in this way imitating the rooster and his spurs. As for the woman, she tries to seduce the man by hiking up her skirt.
