Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz, or more known as Compay Segundo, was a legendary Cuban composer, musician and guitarist. He became world famous with the ensemble “Buena Vista Social Club” in 1997. From the age of 9 he grew up in Santiago de Cuba and studied the clarinet, guitar and tres cubano. In the late 1920’s Compay invented a new instrument, called “trilina” (or armónico) which has 7 strings (a hybrid between the Spanish guitar and the Cuban tres). He was also known for being an exceptional bongo and conga player.
Compay Segundo became popular in his home country in the 40’s when he formed Los Compadres with Lorenzo Hierrezuelo. After the Cuban revolution Segundo worked as a cigar roller before returning to the world of music in the 80’s. The world famous Buena Vista Social Club by Ry Cooder brought him international fame.
