Leadership teens learn about Salsa

At Jackson Hole High School on December 2nd, dozens of Latino and Latina students, as they munched on triangle shaped baked dough with cheese (pizza), the wife of one of the music teachers asked them to do something they weren't expecting - salsa. We're not talking about a culinary class in making a delicious dip for your tortilla chips, we're talking the Cuban dance craze.

Several of the students were quoted as saying they felt "pretty silly", but they participated anyways. "We bribed them with Pizza," one of the musical teachers was quoted as saying.

The group gathering was originally for the school's Latina leadership program, an organization formed to pay special attention fo the needs of Latina girls at the school. It is a model program that spawned from a previously also successful pilot of a similar program. On a regular basis, 15-20 girls participate in the discussions and get togethers.

Normally, boys are strictly forbidden to Latina events here, nor are they allowed to join the leadership club. Eventually, the counselors at the school decided the Latino boys needed a similar venue as the girls to address their own demographic issues. Contributing to the community in a positive and forward-thinking manner is what the group is all about.

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
