Recently, Cathy wrote to an online web magazine and asked them about Zumba. She reported having arthritis and some joint degeneration, and having her knees hurt after trying Zumba. She was worried she should not be taking Zumba classes. The answer she received not only provided an explanation about her specifically, but also a nice blurb about the hot dance craze sweeping the planet.
The response given by the webpage was to not give up Zumba yet. A lot of people say that the spicy, energy-filled aerobic and salsa dance craze has really helped them get their blood pumping like nothing else could. No more boring dance moves, classes or videos, but a new party of music and movement that is missing absolutely nothing except maybe some chips and dip. The Latin beat adds to the estimation that you can burn between 400 and 1,000 calories per hour moving to the fun and catchy music and beats.
They continue to respond and say that if your knees are being impacted by the excercises too much, you should discuss it with the dance instructor and figure out ways to get the benefit of the overall workout while giving your knees more consideration. If you don't want to seem tepid or unable to keep up with the rest of the class, just make sure you are positioned in the back corner of the room and tada - no more embarassing slowdowns during the workout.
Lastly they suggest talking to your doctor about taking an anti-infammatory drug before the workout to avoid this problem an hour beforehand, and also try warming up to the workout with knee-bends or stair step-ups to condition your muscles for what is to come once you arrive at the gym.
