How long have you been dancing for?
I started dancing when I was 11 years old I have been dancing Latin and Ballroom dance for 11 years and went from 'Bronze' up to 'Gold Star' dance levels. I took a break for a coupe of years, but decided to start dancing again ('Silver' up to 'Top Class 2'). I regret that I had to stop dancing when my dance partner decided to quit. I have been dancing Salsa for a little more than two months.
What made you start with salsa?
The main reason for starting with Salsa dancing is my big drive towards dancing in general. I fell in love with Salsa after attending several Salsa party's. I had to stop with Salsa due to personal circumstances, but as they say, “ the blood flows wherever it cannot go”.
Where do you take your lessons?
I started practicing Salsa at home with an Advanced level Salsa dancer when I heard that there were Salsa classes being given in my home town Nieuw Vennep (in the Netherlands). I went there immediately, took a Salsa class and never left the place. These Salsa classes are given in “t Gouden Leeuwtje” by Sederick Short.
What’s your best salsa tip for a night out in Nieuw Vennep?
I am still discovering where the Salsa parties are held, but we have a Salsa party once a month in 't Gouden Leeuwtje.
What is your best salsa memory?
My best Salsa memory is the one in which I I accompanied V. Marshall to one of the biggest Salsa party's in The Hague, held in the dance school & party center “van der Meulen-Wesseling”. I had never taken a Salsa class before, but I was dancing while executing Cross Body Turns and many more Salsa dance techniques.
What is your worst salsa experience?
One of my worst experience with Salsa dancing happened when I was practicing Salsa at home together with a male Salsa dancer. For me, it seemed like he saw the dance for more than it really is. The positioning of his hands seemed to wander off too often and the dance moves he came with were not the same as the ones I had learned in my Salsa classes.
What are the best salsa tips you have for [men/women] dancing salsa?
My advice to both man and women dancing Salsa would be: the man leads and the lady follows. Try to really listen to the music instead of trying to anticipate to whatever is coming up next. Let the wonderful Salsa music be your guide.
Which song will get you up on the dance floor?
Extreme- “Te ExtraÑo”, Ricky Martin - “Que Mas Da”, Elvis Crespo – “Suavemente” & “Pintame”, Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony – “No Me Ames” and many more songs.
Which salsa dancer/teacher/choreographer inspires you?
The ones who inspire me the most are Tanja “La Alemana” & Jorge “Ataca” and my own Salsa teacher Sederick Short. I have seen YouTube films of both La Alemana & Ataca and Sederick & Vanessa Mambi. The thought “I want to do that too” works like an aphrodisiac.
Where do you see salsa going in 5 years from now?
I think that in five years from now the Salsa scene will still be growing.
What inspires you on the dancefloor?
People who are driven inspire me, but they must have the same amount of fun that I am having whilst dancing Salsa. You have to allow yourself to laugh on the dance floor.
Lastly, if there was one salsa wish you could make, what would that be?
I would like to do more with Salsa dancing. I am thinking on dancing at a high(er) dance level and to participate in Salsa dance competitions. These are my wishes. I wish that they will become my reality.
