All Salsa Dancers wear Black

It is the first thing I learned when it comes to Salsa and fashion. Real Salseros wear black!  And the funny thing is, I learned this from guys! It was about 4 years ago when I was talking to some guys about the party and the people, when one of the guys pointed at a die-hard Salsero and said “All Salseros wear black!”

Apparently, it is a well known fact that all die-hard Salseros and Salseras wear black! Why? Because it is easy, simple, matches every dance shoe and you cannot see all the sweat! I know from my own experience that it can be hard to find something to wear to a party.

Every time I stand in front of my closet to get dressed for a party I think:

What kind of party is it?

Is it just Social Salsa dancing on a school night, or is it a Gala Party of a Salsa congress or festival?

What did I wear last time?

You can not appear in the same outfit twice at the same party.

What kind of crowd will attend this party?

If you are a party animal like me, you know which people will be there, or you make sure you will know by calling a friend.

How is the weather?

I can tell you that you will make the mistake of wearing a short dress when it is snowing outside only once! OK, maybe twice..

Does this dress or top clash with my dance shoes?!

Do I need pockets for my phone, key’s and wallet? Or can I bring a bag with me, which I
can leave behind at the DJ booth or cloakroom?

And so much more..

I do confess that when I do not know what to wear, I will just wear my black dress or black top & jeans. But, when I have the time and energy, I like to pick out a colorful outfit that represents me. I love red, pink, green and especially blue! Finding matching earrings, do my hair – differing from a ponytail to braids – and, of course, finding matching shoes and bag can be very entertaining. I even have more fun whilst dressing our Salsa show team up for a performance. I like to help the girls with their make-up & hairdo, knot the ties for the guys, etc. And then I enjoy their performance with full confidence, because they look great! When it comes to dressing up, I already have fun preparing for a party instead of just being at the party! Am I the only one, or are there more die-hard Salseros and Salseras out there who likes to dress up as well? Please let me know so I can sleep tonight!

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
