Ever heard of Edie the Salsafreak?

‘Ever heard of Edie the Salsafreak? Go on Youtube and watch some of her moves! She’s the best‘. This is what my teacher would say when asked what cool moves to do and tips for ladystyling. I’m not a lady or woman for that matter but was definitely curious about these cool moves by this salsa freak. For those who don’t know, Edie is all over the internet, and yes Youtube too.  Check out these videos I ran into and watch the little details of the moves she implements while dancing. It’s great.

Did you notice how she plays with the music, implementing sophisticated yet fun moves and styling while following any lead? All this with a smile on her face! This is what my dance teacher meant. Anything like stroking your hair,  an arm movement, a little shoulder shake,  fast leg kick, maybe  even a look or stare can be considered to be ’styling’.  These little things make salsa so much fun, and before you know it, you will be creating your own style.  Styling and cool moves will set you apart from the rest who might just be going through the motions (combination after combination), with a face that looks like they just swallowed the most bitter medicine ever. Instead have fun with it.

Of course proper technique, knowing combinations, knowing how to lead or follow are important aspects of dancing. But most of us (the expert and pro’s included) are dancing for enjoyment, for fun.  So play around like Edie, react to the music and your dance partner and you will become a great dancer.  Like Edie;  her style, technique and precision are just phenomenal.  It’s not a surprise that Edie the Salsafreak is an internationally well known salsa dance teacher and performer. She gives bootcamps (i.e. learn salsa in one day), workshops and also does great shows. She’s passionate about teaching,  and continues to tour all over the world. So watch out for her and improve your salsa. I know I will…

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
