The following situations happens on most of the Salsa dance floors worldwide: you start to dance with a dance partner who dances a different Salsa dance style as your own. Latinos and American style Salsa and Mambo dancers get confused when dancing with partners having a – seemingly – different Salsa style.
This article explores some ways for having a great Salsa dance on the social dance floor.
On1, On2 or Cuban?
The first problem budding Salsa dance fanatics are confronted with is guessing the dance style of their dance partners. There are 3 mayor Salsa dance styles worldwide: Cuban Style Salsa (Casino), LA Style Salsa on1 and New York Style Mambo on2. These three different styles of Salsa dancing are being taught worldwide, and in each styles there are different sub-genres such as the Puerto Rican and the New York style in on2 dancing.
So, what happens when a leader wants to dance with a follower? Most of the time, the Leader will ask the Follower which Salsa dance style she prefers (or has learned) to dance. “Do you dance on1 or on2” is a much heard sentence on the social Salsa dance floors. Why is that? In fact, most Salsa dance instructors will teach their students that “the Leader leads and the Follower Follows”. I have thought ofan additional guideline for worldwide Salsa dance success: “the Leader also adapts to the Salsa style and the dance level of the Follower”. This extra “rule of Salsa dance engagement” makes it possible for all Salseros and Salseras worldwide to dance comfortably with each other.
Watch this video clip of Arelis, Crazy Salsa and Alejandro dancing together on1 and on2. Are;is forst follows LA Style on1 and then follows Pueto Rican Mambo on2.
What do you need?
There are some necessary requirements needed to make Salsa dancing with all dance partners worldwide:
Both the Leader and the Follower must be able to maintain a consistent basic. The “Quick Quick Slow” basic Salsa dance principle applies to every Salsa dance style. And, the most important thing is to know on which count the Leader starts with his Breaks (on1, on2 or on3). The Leaders and the Followers aspiring to dance Salsa with every dance partner around the globe must learn and master different (if not all) Salsa dance styles. This will enhance their flow and flexibility. Follow dance classes from Salsa dance teachers with different Salsa dance styles. This tactic will not only aid you, but you will also be able to combine Salsa dance elements from different Salsa styles.
