The development of sexy dance crazes is picking up pace in the Latin world. There is a new dance craze in Brazil called “Surra de Bunda”. Roughly translated from Brazilian Portuguese, it means “Butt Beat” or “Butt Pounding”, but people are calling it “The Ass Kiss”.
Will this new dance, which combines Booty Shaking with Lap Dancing, take over the world and find its way into the international Salsa dance scene? Let us find out!
Reggaeton has had a global impact. The dance evolved from the sexy Jamaican “Dancehall” and American “Grinding” into the erotic Reggaeton “Perreo” and ended in the pornographic “Perreo Sandunguerro”, the latter two being “Doggy Style” and “Prostitute Style” Reggaeton dancing. This process of the sexualization of dance styles seems to happen more locally, regionally or in marginalized societies. So, Reggaeton evolved to become more erotic by nature in the relatively poor Caribbean and South American societies . The sexual nature of Reggaeton and other sexy dance crazes such as the Brazilian Lambada were “toned down” when they were introduced to the more global and rich Western society by adding Western style dance elements such as Streetdance and intricate Turn Patterns to them. Dance instructors from the West made Reggaeton a-sexual by adding Streetdance moves to it, and Brazilian Zouk became less sexual because of the instructors adding intricate Turn Patterns & large Styling elements to this formally forbidden dance in order to make it more accessible to a larger commercial target group.
“Surra de Bunda” – one of the latest Brazilian dance crazes - is an invention of the Brazilian dance group “Tequileiras do Funk” based in the municipality of São Paulo - Brazil - called São José dos Campos. These type of Brazilian sexy dance styles started in the “favelas” (= poor villages) at the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Hyper sexual “Funky Carioca” or “Bailes Funk” can range from sexy dances with heavy Booty Shaking whilst increasing in speed such as “Danca do Creu” up to the simulation of gang-bang orgies on and off stage. Explicit sex often happens during these parties, which are accompanied by lots of violence and shootings. The main difference between these dances from the favelas of Rio and the “Surra de Bunda” is that the standard of living in São José dos Campos is relatively high.
How to Dance Surra de Bunda
The dance is characterized by the man sitting down with his legs in front of him and the girl dancing around him. Eventually, the girls kneels in front of him with her behind facing his face. Often the girl will place her ankles on the man's shoulder whilst locking them. At this point the girl starts to ram her buttocks against the man's face to the rhythm of the music. As he gets aroused, she drops hard on him. This dance has already caused injuries to some men, and it can be compared to accidents happening in the Jamaican Daggerin'. “Surra de Bunda” became popular because of “Tequileiras do Funk” spreading many videos of their dance shows online. The group's YouTube channel has now been taken off-line, but not before others started adopting the dance of the clips and broadcasting them on some Brazilian television outlets. The dance was originally developed with over-the-top humorous intentions, but was taken very seriously by the Brazilian youth and media.
