Salma Hayek leads an incredible formation of stars in a year-long campaign for the National Domestic Violence Hotline to help end domestic violence. As the honorary chair of the committee, she is joined by other honorary members Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Nicole Kidman, and many others.
Salma has received an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe nomination, a SAG nomination, and a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress for the lead role in the movie Frida. She is also a noted social activist and is very concerned about the prevention of domestic violence. Several years ago, the hotline honored her at their Vital Link Awards ceremony as the Voices of Change recipient in recognition of her desire and ability to speak out in public about this important cause.
She said "I would like to see more people take a stand against domestic violence. This is a terrible epidemic, and we must all work together to demand that no one has to be a victim of abuse." "We, as a society, believe strongly in safety and security, but too many women and children do not feel safe in their own homes. The goal of this awareness campaign is to create a great movement helping victims of domestic violence and to make everyone understand, through education and positive messages, what Love Is," said Hayek.
Celebrities use their profiles to help bring awareness and funding to the cause, and so far 2.3 million people have been helped by the Hotline.
Currently, the Hotline receives over 21,000 calls per month. The committee is hoping to continue to increase awareness and let people know that help is available, and one day stamp out domestic violence once and for all.
