Former TV choreographer and two times international Salsa champion Alex da Silva is fighting for a “not guilty” verdict on the four counts of forcible rape, two counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object and two counts of assault with intent to commit rape he is now facing.
Alex da Silva is not alone in his struggle. There are many who are helping him to get his bail down and rallying for support from other international celebrities and friends. The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Salsa expert was arrested two times for the same charges, but the District Attorney had not pressed charges the first time around. The full article on Alex da Silva's first arrest in April 2009 can can be read here. Da Silva was arrested for the second time at his North Hollywood home in August, 2009. His bail had been set for 6,2 million dollars, which is a record high for a rape case. According to his attorney, the bail for murder is 1 million dollars. Since that time, da Silva has remained in a prison cell in Van Nuys, California U.S.A.
Mother and Friends lend a Helping Hand
Edith da Silva – the mother of Alex da Silva – spoke out to the press and talked about her conviction of her son's innocence. Mrs. da Silva said, “Alex is beautiful, I love him more than anything,” She continues, “He stopped when he was in Israel and came over to visit me at the hospital.” “He's wonderful.” Anthea Jay Kamalnath – a fervent blogger and human rights activist who is also convinced of da Silva's innocence - has been rallying for months to get da Silva's bail down and to convince his friends and co-stars to support and help him. Kamalnath sent an email to Foxxhole & Sirius Radio and forwarded it to OnlineSalsa.com. She wrote that the District Attorney lost the chip to Alex da Silva's cellphone so he cannot contact his close friends whom he would like to ask for support. The human right activist also wrote, “I helped lower his [Alex da Silva's, red.] bail by 4.8 million.” She continues,
“He is looking for the following contacts: Magic Johnson, Jamie Foxx and Dave Alan Grier. All are former co-stars and students of Alex and close friends. I have outed the injustice in his case on my blog."
The 'hardcore' fan of Alex da Silva also sent an email to WikiLeaks, saying, “WikiLeaks, if you can help, please help. I know this is a very strange email to be getting. I am here for free media and civil rights.”
Sceptics
There are also many who are not convinced of Alex da Silva's presumed innocence. A woman naming herself Danny Kaye wrote a long comment in reaction to the OnlineSalsa.com article mentioned before. She allegedly has had some misfortune with Alex. Kaye warns people who are considering lending their money to Alex da Silva. She says, “I know he learned that if he borrows money from someone smart enough to get the agreement notarized to pay it back, or you could end up paying A LOT more than you borrowed! But I really want him to realize that when a girl says NO (or doesn't give the vibe she wants to be with you), BACK OFF! It's not worth your life, career, or freedom.” Danny Kaye described how Alex da Silva courted her, forced himself onto her, dated her for six weeks and then – in her own words - “it ended when he started messing around with my money! “
OnlineSalsa.com will continue to follow this case closely and report on other findings leading up to Alex da Silva's trial. The following is a clip of Alex da Silva's dance class.
