In April 2009 the whole International Salsa Dance Community was in shock of the news of Alex Da Silva’s arrest. Da Silva, an International Salsa Dance Instructor, choreographer for Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance”, and World Salsa Champion of 2002 and 2007, had been charged with sexually abusing four of his female students in his 2 homes in North Hollywood and Van Nuys (U.S.A.) for over a period of six years. His bail had been set for 3.8 million dollars.
The official police statement said: “The victims allege that he lured them to his homes in North Hollywood and Van Nuys. He then used a ruse [drugs] to get them into his bedroom, where he raped them.” At the end, all the charges against Alex Da Silva were dropped on his first and only court date. The court released Da Silva from jail with no fines or charges. A couple of months later he choreographed and executed a Salsa Dance Routine where he and his dance partner Alien did a satire on the overall situation that happened to him. In July 2009, they performed their Salsa Show during the Hamburg Salsa Congress (Germany).
The famous Salsa News Site International Salsa published an article in December 2009 on Da Siva’s criminal case in LA Court. The newspaper also published the pictures of the alleged victims. LAPD Detective Derr, lead investigator against Da Silva, wrote an e-mail to International Salsa asking the Salsa News agency to remove the pictures in order to avoid legal action and civil liability.
Derr wrote: “My name is Detective Derr from the Los Angeles Police Department. I am the lead investigator in the Alex DaSilva case. Please remove the names and pictures of the Victims you have posted on your webpage. Victim’s information is confidential by law. Please remove the post immediately to avoid civil liability and legal action.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Detective Dennis Derr”
International Salsa took this letter as a threat not only to them, but also to the Freedom of Press, which is their constitutional right. The Salsa newspaper immediately sought the help of the American Civil Liberties Union to help them resolve this case, which they successfully did. They now feel victorious after receiving a letter of apology this month (April 2010) from the ACLU and detective Derr.
The letter had the following content: “Thank you for the clarification on the internet posting. I mistakenly thought the confidentiality rule applied universally and not strictly to law enforcement.
My apologies
Detective Dennis Derr”
Salsa magazines such as Salsa International and OnlineSalsa.com are dedicated to bringing news, shows, music, and happiness to the international Salsa Dance and Music community. It is clear that we can only do our calling if we do not fear repercussion of those around us having a great amount of power and influence.
