Salsa was born in Latin America and the Caribbean, but it's become a phenomenon in an unlikely place: Albuquerque, New Mexico. Better known for the salsa condiment than the salsa dance, Albuquerque will surprise visitors with its love of this sexy, rhythmatic dance. Every Friday until the end of August, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop hosts Salsa Under the Stars at the Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater.
This lively outdoor dancehall takes place from 7 to 10 p.m., rain or shine and will run adults $13 to shake it with the best Albuquerque has to offer. While I secretly watch Dancing with the Stars and dream of being able to move like that, in reality I'm the girl who will only dance in the middle of a crowded venue because I still dance like an awkward high schooler. If I was going to go to a dance event, clearly I was going to need help.
Enter Joseph Gonzalez, salsa dance instructor extraordinaire with Ballet Repertory Theatre. Joseph has been dancing for over 14 years and is a professional instructor who's competed across the country. Hopefully, with his extensive experience he can cure my two left feet and desire to lead. For nearly two hours Joseph patiently taught my small group some basics like a box step and a rock step. Hearing him describe the steps and watching him do it, it seemed like a piece of cake, but my brain/foot connection must be weak. I did get the basic steps down, but I have a long way to go to make it look sexy. Thank goodness I can still hide within the crowd at the upcoming Salsa Under the Stars!
