Secret Reasons why Men Rule in Salsa Dancing

Salsa Dance instructors are desperately trying to figure out how to get men to attend their Summer Salsa Dance classes, with the World Soccer Championships just around the corner. Many leaders already following regular Salsa courses indicate they will be “unavailable” from tomorrow, June 11 until July 11, 2010. The teachers giving 'loose' classes – dance classes without prior inscription – will take the biggest blow.

This article explores the many reasons why men rule in Salsaland.

An average of 90% of Salsa and Mambo Dance instructors around the world have one common problem: the lack of men, or having too many women in their Salsa classes. The reasons for men not wanting to dance have been addressed in countless of articles just like this one. Tips on how to convince men to dance Salsa can be found in this article, and in this one you will find some legitimate reasons why men should dance Salsa.

But none of them gives the ultimate solution to the this very impending problem. This need for men puts the ones who stick to taking Salsa Dance classes in a very favorable position: they become 'Salsa Kings'. But before knowing the 'how', we should first explore the 'why'.

Women not wanting to dance Together

The two main reasons causing this problem is the need most women taking Salsa classes have to dance together with men, and their reluctance to dance together with other women. This natural urge is one of the few things the Women Liberation Movement has not been able to eradicate. Most women taking Ladies Styling classes do this to enhance their own dancing abilities in order to attract more male dance partners. Zumba Aerobic classes provide a good alternative for the ladies wanting to just have some fun and burn those dreaded calories at the same time they enjoy catchy Latin Rhythms. But these activities are no real substitutes for ladies dancing together with men who leads them in a way that they feel they are princesses or queens on the dance floor.

Free Opportunities for Men to become 'Salsa Kings'

The men dancing Salsa have many opportunities to become very good Salsa dancers. Instructors give men having a higher dance level than Beginners the opportunity to take free Salsa classes by becoming 'teachers assistants'. They have to pay only for their own (higher level) Salsa classes or course, and they dance free of charge together with the ladies paying for their lower level dance classes. These men get plenty of opportunities to master their Basic Partnering techniques by repetition. Some Salsa Dance schools also accept men coming from other Salsa schools and having a higher level than Beginners to follow all their Salsa classes without having to pay a dime. The savvy and opportunistic males will travel the whole city or country to take free Salsa classes from different teachers. Men dancing in student Demo teams are very coveted assistants. Some of them pay only for their Salsa choreography training or for their Advanced dance classes and follow all the Intermediate and Beginners classes 'on the Salsa house'.

The following video shows another opportunity for men to become Salsa Kings: men following free Salsa Dance workshops being instructed at clubs, or Salsa students making deals with (Salsa) club owners to give the Salsa Dance workshops themselves. See how the instructor breaks on different timing in the music while teaching some Salsa Basic steps & shines.

From 'Salsa Dance King' to 'Super Salsa Instructor'

These 'free rides' provide these men with another bonus: they can copy all the teaching skills from their instructors and become Salsa teachers themselves. This alternative and free manner of completing a  Salsa Instructor's course is only the beginning for some new Salsa teachers. Some of them also attend Salsa classes from renowned Salsa Dance instructors without telling them that they are Salsa teachers. They pay the same tuition fee a regular Salsa student does, and apply all of the new Turn Patterns and techniques they have learned in their own Salsa Dance instructional groups.

Conclusion: a man who starts taking Salsa classes can become a Salsa Instructor in only one year without having to invest a lot of money! He also gets tons of respect and admiration from men and women alike. This leads to him climbing to a higher social status, which in turn makes him very attractive.

Men dancing Salsa are Kings, no doubt about it. It would be wise for everyone reading this article to refrain from telling other men about the advantages they could have if they would just make some effort and go through the rough beginnings of learning to dance Salsa.

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
