Shakira is now on Top of the World!

According to a news survey, the Colombian Latin Artist and Superstar Shakira is the Most Popular Latin Musician in the world. The Latin Singer/Songwriter has taken over the world of Latin Music with her powerful hip-rolls and her stunning voice.

Shakira Mebarak (full name Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll), who was born on February 2, 1977 into a poor family in Baranquilla (Colombia), is now leading the download charts in more than 35 countries. Mebarak also leads the list of most successful Latin American Stars compiled by Nokia’s Ovi Music. The survey is based on global downloads. Trailing behind Shakira are Thalia, Chayenne, and Luis Miguel (the ex-husband of Mariah Carey). Here is the Top Ten: Shakira, Alejandro Fernandez, Camila, Luis Miguel, Legiao Urban, Thalia, Vivente Fernandez, Chayenne, Jose Jose, and Pedro Fernandez.

This news comes as a blessing for the ‘Hips Which Does Not Lie’ in these times of turmoil. Shakira recently used her influence as a mega Latin Star to fight a new anti-immigration bill, which is now law in the state of Arizona (U.S.A.). Last Thursday (April 29, 2010), Shakira organized a meeting at City Hall with the Mayor of Phoenix Phil Gordon and other government officials to discuss this controversial legislation. The new law, approved by the Republican Governor Jan Brewer of the Arizona State, effectively encourages racial profiling by the state’s Law Enforcement Agencies. On another note: Shakira has been recently added to the list of illustrious stars performing at the Glastonbury Festival (U.K.) on June 26, 2010. She will join great artists such as Midlake, George Clinton, Scissor Sisters, and the Pet Shop Boys. This three day Music Extravaganza will have U2, Muse, and Stevie Wonder as ‘headliners’. 

The fans of Shakira will also be thrilled with the news of her music collaboration with South African band FreshlyGround being chosen as the official anthem of this year’s World Soccer Championships, which are held this summer in South Africa. Officials present at the sports tournament with ‘Time for Africa’ were very impressed with their duo performance. The pair will perform the track at the World Cup kick-off concert during the tournament’s opening ceremony in Soweto on June 10th. Shakira and FreshlyGround will also perform their song again on July 10th, one day before the final (July 11th). The song has already been released to radio stations all across the world in preparation of the upcoming World Cup.  

Shakira is now at the top. Chances are she will stay there for a very long period.
