The sweet truth about Salsa Nights

After vacationing in Miami with friends in December 2000, I vowed to learn the popular Latin dances that I found so mesmerizing. I now go out dancing regularly in South Jersey and Philadelphia and often blog about my experience in the salsa scene. It’s a nightclub scene without most of the nonsense that normally comes with it.

The salsa, merengue, bachata and cha-cha music is hot, hot, hot and it’s hard not to get your groove on. These hard-hitting percussions make you want to work your elbows and shoulders so that it doesn’t look like your hips are having all the fun. And the dance moves are beauty personified, coming across as sexy and elegant.

It’s like Rhythm Nation when dozens of couples are sharing space on the dance floor, moving in sync to a fast-paced song but performing different moves. With a strong lead and a good follower, the dance can be every bit as intoxicating as six shots of Patron.

People are out having fun and it’s obvious from all the smiles and laughter on the dance floor, and off. The atmosphere is both relaxing and invigorating. You will rarely if ever hear cussing. Bad attitudes are checked at the door. And excessive drinking is virtually non-existent because it’s hard to dance when you’ve had too much. It’s a high bar to clear but the Salsa Nights deliver week after week.

Many of the regulars and even beginners feel compelled to return as often as possible for what some call their “salsa fix.” You’ll see teens dancing next to retired folks. You’ll see Asians, Hispanics, blacks and Caucasians. You’ll see same-sex couples, those who are romantically involved and others who just want to dance to the music.

You owe it to yourself to check it out, at least once!

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
