Tips for Advancing to Intermediate Salsa Dance Level

Have you just finished your Beginners, Basic or Level 1 Salsa dance course? And did your Salsa teacher tell you that you are ready to take on the next dance level? Now it is time to asses some important facts before you decide to follow Intermediate level Salsa classes. Honesty is the key in making the right choices.

Be True to Yourself

A Salsa dance school is - for the most part - a commercial institution. The main goal of Salsa instructors asking money for their classes is to earn money. Fear of losing clients compels Salsa teachers to advance all of their students to the next dance level, even if they are not yet ready. This policy is more common in smaller Salsa schools than in bigger ones: the latter can afford to loose some clients. It is imperative that you ask yourself the following questions and answer truthfully:

  • Do I REALLY master the basic steps?
  • Can I find the “one” in Salsa music at ALL times?
  • Are my fellow Salsa students satisfied with how I lead/follow?

You are ready for the next level if you, your instructors and your fellow students can answer 'yes' to all of  these questions. If not, then it would be wise to follow the Beginners course again, or follow the Beginners classes as an addition to your Intermediate Salsa course . Remember that it is not about getting the title 'Advanced Salsa Dancer' as fast as you can; it is about mastering your techniques so you can dance with any dance partner.

Your Fellow Students

You just heard your Salsa teacher congratulate everyone of your Salsa instructional group for advancing to the next level, but you have strong doubts about some of your fellow students. Chances are you will end up following Salsa classes with the same people who are having problems with one or more of the three points mentioned earlier. You can take the following actions:

  • Attend the Salsa classes of another Salsa school.
  • Offer the “weaker” students to go out Salsa clubbing together.
  • Be patient and support/help the weaker students by asking questions to your Salsa instructor.

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
