Why do Latinas stick out their behinds and grind them against men’s pelvic areas?

For the last couple of years Reggaeton music and dance are systematically taking over the Latin world. The mix of a pulsing beat, rebellious song texts and the sexual/erotic dance knows many forms and gradients worldwide. The original ‘Perreo’ (‘Doggy Style’) way of dancing has been confined to the Caribbean, to some Latino countries, and to the international R&B dance scene.

This  is the first of a series of reports exploring the different forms of Forbidden Dances and the reasons behind the ‘How’ and ‘Why’ of their development in different societies. The Caribbean and Latin dance world know several dances which started out as being ‘Forbidden’: the Dominican Bachata, the Jaimaican Bubbling, the Brazilian Lambada, Samba, and the Argentinean Tango, are some of the dance forms which were not widely accepted as being ‘the proper way to dance’. In Western society there is a tendency of ‘de-sexualizing’ the original dance forms to make them more acceptable to the general public. In the grey zone of ‘Pornographic’ and ‘Stiff’ seems to be ‘Sensuality’: the dance should leave much to the imagination and not provoke the need for sexual intercourse between the dance partners. But in the Caribbean and in certain parts of South America quite the opposite is happening.  Jamaican ‘Daggerin’ and the Brazilian ‘Funky Carioca’ dances are done by explicitly acting out sexual intercourse on the dance floor. In 2010 the simulation of sexual ‘gang bangs’ is becoming more rule than exception on the dance floor and on stage.

One thing all these forbidden dances have in common is the age of the ones dancing them. The majority of the dancers are in their teens and young adulthood. Another commonality is their socio-economic status. Most of these dances originate in ‘low class’ communities which are deprived of economic stability, a proper institutionalized educational system, and equal job opportunities. These societies are male oriented, but a large part of the male populace is absent as caretakers to their off-springs. This development result in a fierce and growing competition between women for available men.

And men, especially the Latinos and the Caribbean males are attracted to Sex. The younger generation of women will use any means to show these men how special they are. So they attend many Beauty pageants at an early age, the mothers teaching their daughters how to please men, the clothing becomes more revealing, and their dancing evolve from being sensual to pressing their pelvic areas onto the faces of strange men.

Very interesting point: And men, especially the Latinos and the Caribbean males are attracted to Sex. Europeans and White North-Americans are not attracted to sex then? What about the large amount of tourists from these regions going to Latin America in pursuit of pleasures their "free-societies" cannot offer them.

The societies in Latin America are much less male oriented than the West. Half of the countries in the southern-cone (Mercosul) are governed by women (Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay). In my coutnry, Brazil, mothers are normally responsible for the education of children and are the only member of the family entitled to receive the dole check. Also, african traditions brought a much stronger role for women in these societies. Women are normally the highest member in vodoo/candomble liturgy practised in Brazil and in the Caribbean.

On the other hand, most of the international traffic of human beings, of which women are the main target happens in Europe. European leaders have underage sex with girls and are granted immunity from prosecution from their parliaments. They also stigmatise women from immigrant backgrounds. Most of europe is governed by men as is North-America. Furthermore, these places contribute enormously to the abuse of women by sending copious amount of tourist seeking underage sex with girls in Asian countries, like Thailand.

In few places in the world women are more valued and respected than in Brazil and South-America. A very good example of these is as you put that women in this part of the worldhave the freedom to dance as they wish without being stigmatised by our societies. It is a shame we cannot say the same about our brothers in the West.

Dance because you like it and show that. Own the dance. A good student can copy the teacher but a great dancer learns and then makes it her own. So, create your own style and do your thing. And very important: dare to dance!
